THIS MONTH'S OUTING :  June 14th - New Smyrna Beach!

Club Information

Club Overview

We are an organization of men, woman and children that enjoy fishing. We play, at making the perfect cast, to the perfect fish, which presents the fly in such a way that the fish can’t refuse the offering, RIGHT! We spend many hours trying to achieve that perfect presentation. What is most amazing is that we catch fish on very light rods creating the thrill of the catch and the satisfaction of a safe release so that the fish can reproduce and provide many more fish.

We are sincerely dedicated to conservation and keeping the environment of our oceans, bays, rivers and land in good health. We support the Coastal Conservation Association and the Federation of Fly Fisherman. We practice safe catch and release techniques and plant red mangroves that grow roots that serves as a hiding place and nursery for baby fish to grow and survive. It is said that each healthy red mangrove tree provides a nursery for over 10,000 juvenile fish.

We fish throughout Florida, scheduling yearly outings to Boca Grand to catch snook and tarpon. We take trips to Vero Beach to catch bonito, barracuda, jack, tarpon and snook. Some of our members travel the world fishing for salmon, trout, and bonefish; we also try hard for permit, and occasionally, land one. During the year, we fish the Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon for redfish, trout, tarpon drum, and ladyfish. We fish Florida’s rivers and lakes to catch bass, crappie, bream and shad. We have a yearly campout on the St Johns River, targeting the shad run. Visit our photo album for proof.

Our monthly meetings provide speakers who specialize in fishing and educate us with improving fishing techniques, tying flies, casting and identifying locations and many really “tall stories”.

Most of all, we get to talk and make friends with members of all walks of life that enjoy fishing and sharing fish stories and lies. Come join us!

Education

A knowledgeable angler will enjoy his days fishing more. The serious angler continually strives to become more knowledgeable. The Backcountry Flyfishing Association keeps its members informed and educated by means of the following:

Fellowship

The Backcountry Flyfishing Association actively promotes friendship and fellowship among its members. In addition to the aforementioned activities, BFA members plan monthly outings to local waters. Depending on the time of the year, outings are planned from fresh and saltwater. The outings are mixed up targeting Bass, Bluegill, Shad, Redfish, Trout, Snook, Jacks, Ladyfish and Tarpon. A few longer trips may venture to the Everglades, Boca Grand, Vero Beach, the Cape and or possibly the Keys of Florida.

Through our speakers, seminars, outings and shared information, you will become a more informed conservationist and fisherman.

Conservation

Backcountry Flyfishing Association Members and families gathered with many other fishing clubs supporting the Coastal Conservation Associations efforts to plant Red Mangrove trees along the Indian River near the cruise terminal. Thousands of red mangroves collected and grown by the students of Rockledge High School were planted along the shore. Each successful mangrove tree will become the nursery for thousands of baby fish seeking safety among their roots.

BFA member Captain Doug Blanton is to be commended for his service and conservation efforts. Everyone participating had good feelings of accomplishment as they emptied their bucket and planted the small trees. The fiddler crabs moved right in and quickly populated the areas planted, happy for the new protection. Members of the BFA receive credit for conservations efforts in satisfaction of a job well done and reduction in their membership dues.
